Over the nearly 5 years my husband and I have been married, we’ve learned to fit things we enjoy into our budget and find ways to make “home dates” special. Here are a few ideas of some of our favorite meals.

Simply Elegant Home Cooking Ideas

When my husband and I were first married, money was pretty tight (we still don’t like to splurge often, especially around busy holidays like Valentine’s Day).  So one of our favorite easy and elegant home-cooked meals has been cheese fondue, like cheese the fondue in this recipe. Wolff’s has Emmentaler and Gruyere cheeses as well as breads and a wide array of vegetables – and fruits to choose from.

Then we choose an items to dip into the cheese, like:

  • Cubed French bread
  • Carrots
  • Broccoli
  • Celery
  • Snap peas
  • Mushrooms
  • Meatballs (homemade, if I am feeling adventurous)

Next, we’ll fill small bowls with things to dip our cheese-covered foods into, such as:

  • Minced garlic
  • Caraway seeds
  • Fennel seeds
  • Mustard seeds
  • Freshly cracked pepper

Assiette de Fromage: Plate of (cold) Cheese

If you haven’t guessed it by now, cheese is one of my favorite foods. Another one our favorite meals when eating in (especially if we are traveling) is a plate of cheese paired with some tasty options.

Several of our favorite cheeses are available at Wolff’s, including:

  • Chevre
  • Prima Donna
  • Brie
  • Armenian String Cheese
  • Blue cheese

This also pairs well with fresh veggies such as the ones listed above, as well as:

  • Almonds roasted in olive oil and salt
  • Locally made preserves
  • Crisp sliced apples
  • Honeycomb

Cooking simple meals at home is a great inexpensive alternative to eating out during one of the busiest restaurant holidays of the year! Plus, when you eat at home you have more control over the quality of everything you cook.

Gift Ideas

Making your own chocolate covered strawberries is so easy, and even better when they are on sale this week. Check out this simple recipe from the Food Network.
